Studio Information
Instruments
West Virginia University owns a fine Mollenhauer contrabassoon, which all students learn to play during their time here, as well as a number of bassoons that are used primarily by music education students in woodwind methods classes.  If you are considering studying at WVU and do not own your own instrument, please contact Dr. Hileman to discuss the available options before purchasing a bassoon.

Reed Making Equipment
The bassoon studio is equipped with a full complement of reed making tools, and our students learn the entire reed making process, from splitting tubes and gouging, to profiling and shaping, to forming and finishing.  We currently make a European style reed modeled after the reeds of Ovidio Danzi.

Our tools include an RDG gouging machine, a Pfeifer double barrel profiler, a single barrel profiler by Ken Postic, a Rieger #13 shaper and a Rieger #1A shaper.

Ensembles and Performance Opportunities
There are many performance opportunities for bassoonists at WVU.  We have a full symphony orchestra, three concerts bands, the Mountaineer Marching Band, the WVU Chamber WInds, and numerous chamber music opportunities.  All bassoon students also participate in the WVU Double Reed Ensemble, which was a featured ensemble at the 2007 International Double Reed Society Convention in Ithaca, NY.

Lessons
All students receive weekly hour-long private lessons with Dr. Hileman.  In addition, the studio meets for a weekly masterclass, where special topics are discussed and students perform for each other.
